The guy at the tire shop shrugged. “I don’t know what an EV tire is,” he said. “A tire is a tire.” The customer, a woman named Rachel who drove a Ford Mustang Mach-E, walked out. She called me. “Ryan, how do I find the right tires for my car if even the tire shop doesn’t know?” That’s the problem. EV-specific tires are new. Many tire shops don’t stock them. Many don’t know they exist. Some will sell you standard tires that fit your EV, and those tires will work. They just won’t work well. They’ll wear faster, ride louder, and cost you range. The tool has a simple interface. You select your EV make and model from a dropdown menu. Then you see the factory tire size, recommended load index, speed rating, and a list of EV-specific tire models that fit your car. The list includes tires with acoustic foam, reinforced sidewalls, and low rolling resistance compounds. Rachel used the tool. She had a 2022 Mach-E California Route 1. The tool showed her that her stock tire size was 225/55R19 with a load index of 99. It recommended three EV-specific tires: the Michelin Pilot Sport EV, the Pirelli P Zero Elect, and the Hankook iON evo AS. She had never heard of any of them. She ordered the Michelins from an online retailer. A local tire shop installed them. The installer said “these are different. Rachel’s Mach-E weighs about 4,500 pounds. That’s 1,125 pounds per corner. A load index of 99 is about 1,709 pounds per tire – plenty of margin. But some EVs are heavier. A Rivian R1T weighs over 7,000 pounds. It needs a load index of 120 or higher. The EV Tire Matcher accounts for that. It won’t recommend tires that are overloaded. EVs are fast. A Tesla Model 3 Performance can hit 162 mph. It needs Y-rated tires. The matcher will only recommend tires that meet or exceed the car’s factory speed rating. I had a customer with a Tesla Model S Plaid. He wanted to save money on tires. He bought standard all-season tires with a V rating. The car’s top speed is over 200 mph. The tires were rated for 149 mph. That’s dangerous. I explained the speed rating guide to him. He returned the tires and bought Y-rated EV-specific ones. The Tire Size Comparator is useful when comparing EV tires to standard tires. Rachel used the comparator to check that the Michelin EV tires were the same size as her stock tires. They were. The comparator showed no difference in diameter. That meant her speedometer would stay accurate. One thing the EV Tire Matcher doesn’t do is tell you about rolling resistance. That’s a separate metric. EV tires generally have lower rolling resistance than standard tires. That means more range. Michelin claims a 5-7% range improvement with their EV tires. I’ve seen real-world tests showing 3-5%. Not huge, but noticeable. Rachel drove from San Francisco to Los Angeles after installing her new tires. She said “I used to need to charge once on the trip. A standard tire with high rolling resistance can reduce your range by 5-10%. On a 300-mile car, that’s 15-30 miles. That might mean an extra charging stop. Click on any tire to see where to buy it. That’s it. If your car is not in the database, you can enter your tire size manually. The tool will still recommend EV-specific options in that size. The database covers most EVs sold in the US: Tesla, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, Rivian, Lucid, Polestar, Nissan, Chevrolet, and others. It’s updated monthly. I’ve used this tool for dozens of customers. It has never recommended a tire that didn’t fit or that was unsafe. It’s not perfect – no tool is – but it’s the best starting point. One warning: don’t use the tool to find a tire size that’s different from your stock size. The EV Tire Matcher is for matching, not for plus-sizing. But for stock replacement, the EV Tire Matcher is the right tool. Rachel still has her Mach-E. She’s on her second set of EV tires. She gets about 35,000 miles from a set – not great, but better than the 20,000 she got from the standard tires the previous owner had installed.
