We plugged in the numbers. 225/60R17 has a diameter of about 27.6 inches. 225/55R18 has a diameter of about 27.7 inches. That’s a difference of about 0.4%. Wait – that’s actually within Subaru’s spec. I stared at the screen. That wasn’t adding up. “Chris,” I said, “were all four tires the same size?” “Yeah,” he said. “I think so.” “Were they all the same brand? Same model? I walked Chris through the comparison. Stock new tires: 27.6 inches. His used fronts: maybe 27.2 inches. Used rears: 27.5 inches because they had more tread. The difference between the smallest and largest was about 0.3 inches. That’s a circumference difference of almost an inch. Every time the wheels turned, the front tires had to spin slightly faster to keep up. The center differential was slipping constantly. For two weeks. At highway speeds. Until it gave up. If you drive an AWD vehicle – Subaru, Audi, BMW xDrive, Mercedes 4MATIC, Honda CR-V AWD, Toyota RAV4 AWD – never install tires that are more than a quarter-inch different in circumference from stock. And never install two new tires without matching the other two. Always buy four, or find a shop that can shave a new tire to match the tread depth of the others.
