Once you have your stock tire size, you can start comparing. Let’s say your stock tire is 265/70R17. That’s about 31.6 inches tall. It spins about 657 times per mile. Now you want to test a 285/70R17. Type that into the second box. The calculator will show you that the 285 tire is about 32.7 inches tall – 1.1 inches taller. It spins about 634 times per mile. The speedometer will read 60 mph when you’re actually going 62 mph. That’s a 3% error. Acceptable. Now test a 35-inch tire. 315/70R17. That’s about 34.4 inches tall. The speedometer error jumps to 8%. At 60 mph on the speedometer, you’d be going 65 mph. That’s a ticket waiting to happen. The calculator also shows you the difference in circumference. That matters for all-wheel drive cars. If the front and rear tires have different circumferences, the center differential will fight itself. Expensive repairs follow. I remember a customer with a Subaru Outback. He bought used wheels from a guy with a different Subaru model. The front tires were 225/60R17. The rears were 225/55R17. He didn’t check. He drove for three months. The center differential failed. The repair cost $3,200. The tire size calculator would have shown him the circumference difference was over 3% – too high. Use the comparator to see width and sidewall differences. A 285 tire is 20mm wider than a 265. That extra width might rub. The comparator doesn’t measure offset, but it gives you the data you need. One more critical number: revolutions per mile. If your new tire has fewer revs per mile, your odometer will roll slower. That means you’ll accumulate fewer miles on the odometer than you actually drive. If you lease a car and go over mileage, that’s a problem. A guy I know leased a Jeep Wrangler. He put 35-inch tires on it. The calculator showed the revs per mile dropped from 657 to 590 – a 10% drop. He drove the car for 36,000 miles on the odometer. The actual miles were almost 40,000. When you change tire size, the load index may change. A 265/70R17 from one brand might have a load index of 115. A 285/70R17 from another brand might be 116. Higher is fine. Lower is not. Always check. So here’s the step-by-step for using the tire size calculator. First, find your stock tire size. Look at the sidewall or the door jamb sticker. Write it down. Second, decide what new size you want to test. If you don’t have one yet, use the comparator to see common sizes. Third, enter both sizes into the calculator. The tool will show you the diameter, circumference, revs per mile, and speedometer error. Fourth, if the speedometer error is over 3%, consider a different size. A 5% error means your odometer is off by 5%. That’s not a small thing. Fifth, check the circumference difference if you drive an AWD car. Keep it under 2% for Subaru, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, and most other AWD systems. Sixth, use the comparator to check width and sidewall. Compare to your stock measurements. Estimate clearance. Seventh, check the load index of the new tire. Don’t go lower than stock. That’s it. The tire size calculator is not complicated. It just needs the right input.
