I walked him through the numbers. Plug in stock offset: +25. Plug in new offset: -12. The calculator showed that the new wheels would sit 37mm further out from the hub – about an inch and a half. That’s a lot. The outer edge of the tire would be almost two inches further out than stock. The fender liner couldn’t accommodate that much extra width. He had two options. Buy new wheels with a less aggressive offset – something like +12mm – or trim the fender liners and install aftermarket upper control arms to shift the wheel forward. He didn’t want to trim. Tyler also changed his tire size from 275/65R18 to 285/55R20. The comparator showed the new tire was about 10mm wider and almost the same diameter. That extra width, combined with the aggressive offset, made the rubbing worse. If he had kept his stock tire width, the -12 offset might have cleared. Maybe. He learned the hard way. He ordered new wheels with a +12 offset. Those stuck out about half an inch further than stock – still aggressive, but not ridiculous. They didn’t rub. He kept his tires. He was happy. He told me “I wish I had used the calculator before buying.” Another common mistake is buying wheels with too much backspacing for a lifted truck. Tyler’s new tires were about the same diameter as stock, so his gearing was fine. But if you go up two inches in tire diameter, you need to check your effective gear ratio. Back to offset. Scrub radius is the term that nobody uses but everyone should know. It’s the distance between the tire’s contact patch centerline and the steering axis pivot point. Change the offset, you change the scrub radius. Change the scrub radius, you change how the steering feels. Too much positive offset – stock – gives you light steering and good stability. Too much negative offset gives you heavy steering, more kickback over bumps, and a wandering feeling on the highway. I drove a lifted truck once that pulled left every time I hit a bump. The owner blamed the alignment. The alignment was fine. The offset was wrong. The wheels had -24mm offset. The scrub radius was huge. Every bump tugged the steering wheel. He didn’t want to change the wheels, so he lived with it. That’s his choice. But he should have known before he bought. If you’re buying aftermarket wheels, make sure they’re rated for your vehicle’s weight. Cheap wheels from unknown brands might not have a load rating. Stick with major brands. Tyler’s new wheels had a load rating of 2,500 pounds each. His truck needed 2,200. Fine. So what’s the right way to choose offset? First, find your stock offset and backspacing. Look on the back of your current wheel. It’s stamped there. Or measure it. Second, decide how much outward stance you want. A 10-20mm reduction in offset (going from +25 to +10) will push the wheel out about half an inch. That’s noticeable but unlikely to rub on most trucks. A 30-40mm reduction will push the wheel out over an inch. That’s where rubbing starts. A 50mm reduction – going from +25 to -25 – pushes the wheel out almost two inches. Expect rubbing. Expect trimming. Third, use the offset calculator to simulate the change. It’s free. It’s fast. It’s accurate.
